The German ZEW index remains anchored in negative territory in May but is recovering a little. The confidence index thus stands at -34.3 points, against -41 the previous month, and -43.5 consensus. For its part, the index relating to the current situation fell over one month, from -30.8 to -36.5, and came out better than expected (-35 consensus).
The ZEW index is compiled monthly from approximately 350 financial experts. It represents the difference between the portion of optimistic analysts and the portion of pessimistic analysts for the German economic development at 6 months.
