German authorities threatened Telegram with "millions" of fines due to COVID dissidents.

The German authorities said that antiquated protests were growing in the country, and the Telegram channels "published death threats against politicians, doctors, and scientists." Berlin urged Telegram leadership to appoint a representative in Germany.

Guide Telegram messenger shall appoint an official representative in Germany for legal inquiries, said the Minister of Justice of Germany Marco Bushman in an interview with Bild newspaper. Otherwise, he threatened the company with "millions" in fines.

Journalists mentioned that antiquarian protests are growing in the country, and Telegram channels "publish death threats against politicians, doctors, and scientists." However, the messenger does not have a responsible person in the country through whom it was possible to respond to such messages.

“Our laws also apply to Telegram. Therefore, Telegram should appoint a contact person in Germany and create a clear channel for reporting illegal content, ”said Buschman.

Now the German authorities have to send inquiries to the United Arab Emirates, where Telegram is headquartered, he said.

The claims of the German authorities to Telegram are related to the fact that their appeals regarding the calls of COVID dissidents spread in the channels to "kill" politicians and scientists do not reach the company's only known mailbox in Dubai.

Interior Minister Nancy Feather promised, "to do everything possible to uncover these crimes and bring those responsible to justice." She noted that Telegram channels through which information can be disseminated among subscribers are subject to the norms of the German law on network security, which implies the obligation of Telegram to remove illegal content.

Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer, one of the victims of threats, said earlier that Telegram must register an address in Germany.

At the end of December, the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Maria Zakharova, announced that a political campaign was gaining momentum in Germany aimed at limiting the Telegram messenger. According to her, several legal proceedings were opened in Germany, involving fines for the company. She criticized Berlin's actions, noting signs of censorship in them.

Speaking about Germany's policy towards Telegram, Zakharova stressed that Russian state bodies, including the Foreign Ministry, did not stop maintaining Telegram accounts during the period of legal proceedings around the messenger in Russia. “The Russian Foreign Ministry and many other state bodies did not leave Telegram for a single day during the period of judicial (and not repressive) proceedings around the messenger. After all, the court's ban, according to the explanations of Roskomnadzor, was related to the functioning of the platform, not the channels. Accordingly, there was no reason to terminate the maintenance of accounts, ”said a representative of the department.
