WASHINGTON, August 30 - PRIME US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed concern to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in connection with China's plans to buy the Motor Sich plant, the press service of the State Department reported.
The conversation between Pompeo and Zelensky took place on Wednesday, but the State Department published a message about it only on Saturday.
Earlier, the Ukrainian media reported that the DCH group of companies would develop Motor Sich together with the Chinese company Skyrizon Aircraft Holdings. Also, according to media reports, on the night of August 6, Beijing Xinwei Technology Group. reported that its subsidiary Beijing Skyrizon and DCH Group on August 4 jointly submitted an application to the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine for the purchase of Motor Sich shares.
"Secretary of State Pompeo expressed US concern over China's disastrous investments in Ukraine, including Beijing's efforts to acquire the engine manufacturer Motor Sich," the statement said.
Pompeo and Zelensky also discussed the development of events in Belarus, Ukraine's efforts to combat COVID-19, and the achievement of "a diplomatic settlement of Russian aggression in eastern Ukraine."
Relations between Moscow and Kiev have worsened against the background of the situation in Donbass. The Ukrainian authorities have previously repeatedly accused Russia of interfering in the country's internal affairs. In January 2015, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a statement in which the Russian Federation is called the "aggressor country". Russia denies the accusations of the Ukrainian side and calls them unacceptable. Moscow has repeatedly stated that it is not a party to the internal Ukrainian conflict and is interested in Kiev overcoming the political and economic crisis.
