FDPIC still waits for Libra response

Posted 24 July, 2019

The Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) in Switzerland keeps waiting until Facebook's crypto project Libra responds to its information request. The press release was published on the portal of the Swiss government on July 23.

"The FDPIC is currently waiting for the Libra Association to respond to his letter of 17 July 2019 and set out their official position," the report reads.

The regulator wanted to get more details on the project following the statements of David Marcus during the US Senate hearings that were held last week. In particular, he stated that the governance unit was registered in Switzerland and FDPIC would deal with the regulatory issues in terms of Libra's privacy. As a result, he now wants to clarify FDPIC's role as the supervisory authority.

It was noted that Facebook failed to get in touch with FDPIC after the hearings in the USA, and thus the latter had to send the request for its own. This request is expected to bring more details about risks connected with the Libra project regarding users data protection and "proposed appropriate measures to minimize these risks. "
