Air Liquide strengthens its presence in Egypt with a new investment

Air Liquide and EZZ Steel, one of the leading steel producers in the Middle East and Africa, have entered into a long-term contract for the supply of industrial gases to EZZ's new plant in Ain Sokhna, east of Cairo, Egypt. Air Liquide Egypt will invest approximately US$80 million in the construction of an Air Separation Unit (ASU) to meet the needs of EZZ over the duration of the contract, as well as those of other customers present in this industrial area.

With an oxygen production capacity of 770 tonnes per day, this ASU will enable Air Liquide to support the development of the Ain Sokhna area, one of the main heavy industry basins in the country, within the Suez Canal Economic Zone. Air Liquide will also extend its network of pipes in Sokhna in order to connect the future plant to the 4 other air separation units that the Group already operates there, which will contribute to greater reliability of supply.

In line with Air Liquide's objective of carbon neutrality by 2050, the project incorporates a roadmap integrating the supply of renewable energy to reduce CO2 emissions.

Pascal Vinet, Director of the Company and member of the Executive Committee of the Air Liquide group overseeing the Europe Industries activities, declared: "We are proud to collaborate with EZZ Steel and to support the growth of the Egyptian steel industry by participating in the creation of one of the largest industrial basins in the country. Our investment in this new production unit and in the pipeline network will strengthen Air Liquide's infrastructure to meet the growing demand for industrial gases from our customers."
